What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is used when the pulp of the tooth is infected because of tooth decay or a dental injury.
When is root canal treatment needed?
When the pulp of the tooth becomes infected, this can then travel to the rest of the root canal leading to a dental abscess. Without root canal treatment, the tooth may then need to be extracted.
Will it be painful?
Minimal discomfort is felt as we use local anaesthetic, and will feel similar to having dental fillings.
What happens during treatment?
The aim of the treatment is to get rid of all of the infection from the root canal area. After we have removed the infection, we then clean out the area so that further infection does not occur. It takes great skill to carry out root canal treatment and can take time. Often because of this, more than one dental visit may be needed.
During the initial appointment we get rid of any infected pulp within the canal. If abscesses have occurred these will also be drained at the same time. We then prepare the tooth to be filled by cleaning and shaping the tooth. We may then add a temporary filling whilst the tooth canal is left to heal. After a length of time when the infection has fully cleared and settled we will then place a permanent filling.
How will my tooth look after treatment?
A root filling has often looked darker in appearance after treatment in the past. Now, with modern dental technology this is not a common occurrence. If the tooth does look slightly darker we will treat the tooth over several appointments to regain the tooth’s natural colour one again.
What if the tooth gets infected again?
Root canal treatment is normally very successful, but if infection occurs again in the same tooth we will once again carry out the same procedure.
What happens if I don’t have root canal treatment?
If patients do not have root canal treatment we may have to remove the tooth instead. When an infection destroys the dental pulp it cannot heal and we do not recommend leaving an infected tooth in the mouth. Root canal treatments offer patients an alternative to having natural teeth extracted.
Will my tooth be weakened after treatment?
We often cover root canal treated teeth with a crown to offer durability, protection and support to the tooth.
